Taiwan Reef Cichlid for Sale meet Protomelas sp. "Steveni Taiwan"
The Taiwan reef cichlid belongs to the genus Protomelas and is presently called Protomelas sp. "Steveni Taiwan". This group of halpochromine cichlids are endemic to Lake Malawi Africa. Due to their beautiful and vivid colors they are very popular in the aquarium hobby. These cichlids are mouthbrooding and sexually dimorphic which means you can easily tell the male from the females based on colors with the males being most spectacular. Protomelas is made up of fifteen or so species and in general are readily available in the hobby.
The IUCN Red List of endangered cichlids list many species in this genus as least concern; however, a few species P. dejunctus and P. virgatus are noted as vulnerable due to subsistence fishing or potentially over-fishing. This is probably testament to their beautiful coloration and marketability.
Protomelas sp. "Steveni Taiwan" is best housed in a larger aquarium and does well with one male to several females like many other halpochromine cichlids. This species does well other mubuna species such as Peacocks and smaller Haps, the key to remember is to go with less aggressive species. Feeding is relative standard and that is algae based cichlid pellets and flakes. Anything with spirulina is just fine to offer as they graze on aufwuchs and algae in the wild.
