Up for sale are (2) unsexed Vieja synspilum, approximately 2" in size. These Central American Cichlids can be very aggressive and should be kept in a large aquarium to minimize conflict. Adult Synspilum get to be 1', so plan accordingly! The main picture is what the adults look like. The secondary pictures are what they will look like when you receive them.
Paraneetroplus synspilus, the quetzel cichlid, redhead cichlid or firehead cichlid, is a species of cichlid native to Central America where it occurs in the Usumacinta River drainage in the countries of Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. This species can reach a length of 35 centimetres (14 in) TL. It is also popular in the aquarium trade.
It is one of the most colourful cichlid species with males displaying metallic green, blue, green, pink and orange along their flanks. It has been used in creating new hybridized aquarium cichlids that became popular in Asia in recent years and is probably one of the parents of modern blood parrot cichlids and flowerhorn cichlids.

• Water Conditions: pH 6.6 to 7.2; water temperature 75 to 80 degrees F.
• Introduced: Hubbs 1935
• Sexing: When young, very difficult to sex. Males will get larger and develop brighter colors as they mature. It is possible for females to develop a hump as well on their head
• Breeding: Adults spawn on flat rocks which are cleaned by them. The female lays around 1000-2000 eggs. The fry hatch in 3 days. The parents will keep them hidden under rocks or in caves, until they become free swimming a few days later. Feed baby brine shrimp as fry will graze on parent’s mucus and fins.
• Behavior: When young, synspilum will be shy and tend to dart about. They will gain confidence as they grow in size. They will defend their territory but are not very aggressive, very similar to large Oscars.
