Synodontis alberti is the ideal catfish for beginners. This species of catfish goes by two nicknames which are the bigeye squeaker and sometimes the alberti catfish. S. alberti may have
the longest set of barbels of any of the
Synodontis species. Barbels refer to a catfish’s whisker like tactile organs. This species can grow to about eight inches in length and has very large eyes.
The alberti catfish is widespread throughout Central Africa and is
listed on the IUCN red list of endangered species but assessed as least concern. In particular this species is endemic to the Congo Basin of Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo with expection of the MweruLuapula-Bangweulu system. The bigeye squeaker is carnivorous species recorded not to be aggressive with tank mates and does well with most cichlids because it is an awesome scavenger. Synodontis alberti can thrive in temperatures between 72-81 degrees and a pH of 6.0 – 8.0 and is certainly a popular upside down catfish.
