The genus Hemichromis represents a small group of cichlids from West Africa. Within this group are two subsets which are very popular and they are the jewel cichlids and the five spot cichlids.
Jewel cichlids are the most recognizable due to their bright blood red coloration. Jewel fish for sale can represent several Hemichromis species which are H. bimaculatus, Hemichromis stellifer, and Hemichromis lifalili. All three of these species are bright red but the classic representation of the
African Jewelfish or Jewel cichlid is Hemichromis bimaculatus.
H. bimaculatus are found in creeks, streams, rivers and lakes including brackish water lagoons. Males are generally larger than females reaching some three to four inches. These cichlids are not considered community fish because when the spawn they can take over a large area to protect their young. They are also profile breeders generating large spawns. But this fish is worth keeping in any cichlid collection due to their stunning bright red coloration and fascinating cichlid behavior rearing their young.
