Originally called Herotilapia multispinosa, the rainbow cichlid was moved to the
genus Archocentrus so their referred to as
Archocentrus multispinosus currently. Keeping these mid-sized cichlids is relatively easy; they are omnivorous relative to eating and can tolerate most water conditions. Rainbows can be territory so provide able hiding places with caves, clay flower pots or PVC tubing.
Rainbow cichlids are found in the Central American countries of Nicaragua, Honduras and Costa Rica. These fish can be housed with
tank mates like convict fish or other cichlids of equal temperament and size. One of the most interesting things to note about these fish is their ability to make underwater sounds or
vocalizations. A. multispinosus has been recorded
making sounds consisting of volleys and thumps during aggressive interactions and growls before spawning.
