Nanochromis is a genus of cichlids endemic to the Congo River Basin in Central Africa. These cichlids are considered Dwarf cichlids and may be referred to as West African cichlids also. The genus Nanochromis has approximately 10 species or so. Of these species the most popular and most recognizable is Nanochromis transvestitus and Nanochromis nudiceps which are aquarium favorites for a long time. These cichlids have a unique and tube like body shape.

 

Ideally the setup for Nanochromis cichlids is at least 30 gallons with plants, rocks and driftwood for hiding and to allow them to establish territories. These cichlids are known to prefer an acidic pH and a low, general hardness. This species loves to dig and does well on a variety of prepared aquarium foods including pellets, flakes, bloodworms and brine-shrimp which can be freeze-dried or live. Nanochromis dwarf cichlids are great to maintain and worth allocating a tank for. It’s important to note for conversation of these beautiful cichlids that six of these species are marked as endangered by the IUCN Red List of Endangered species.
