Nandopsis is a small genus of cichlid fishes found in lakes, streams and rivers in Cuba and Hispaniola. The species of this genus include N. haitiensis, N. ramsdeni and N. tetracanthus. Of these three cichlids N. ramsdeni is the rarest and has not been imported to the United States for obvious reasons. In Cuba this fish is called Joturo, its nickname. N. tetracanthus has been a steady offering over many years; it’s called the
Cuban cichlid or Biajaca locally. N. haitiensis is also readily available in the hobby and goes by the nicknames Odo or Black Nasty. Odo cichlids entered the US market in the nineties and have been available ever since. Due to the constant flux of reclassifying cichlid genera, there was a period of time when Nandopsis also included N. beani, N. grammodes and
N.dovii.
