biodiversity of Lake Victoria is enormous especially considering it is inhabited by over 500 species of fish with some ninety percent of them being cichlids which belong to the
genus Haplochromis. A recent theory suggests the physics of light penetration in the lake contributed to the cichlid speciation through the action of sexual selection in Lake Victoria.
These cichlids have evolved into a multitude of roles relative to how the eat and behave. Many of these cichlids are broken into categories such as insect eaters, snail crushers or scale scrapers, leaf choppers and ambush predators.
