The ocellated Synodontis or Synodontis ocellifer is a species of upside down catfish from West Africa. This species has been found in the basins of the Chad, Niger, Volta, Senegal and Gambia. This is one of the larger Synodontis catfish known to be a peaceful bottom scavenger which is colored yellowish to brown with numerous black spots. It should be noted when mature these spots look pretty dramatic, they actually look like eyes which is what ocelli translates to mean eye or eyespot.

 

Synodontis ocellifer is listed on the IUCN red list of endangered species but assessed as least concern. This species should be housed in a larger aquarium due to its ability to grow larger than its smaller counterparts. Like most Synodontis species they are omnivores. A diet of sinking catfish pellets, flake food and prepared freeze dried black worms and tubifex will be eagerly welcomed. Be careful of the spines on the pectoral fins which have serrated edges which may cause injury to the fish and hobbyist.
