List of popular aquarium crayfish species for sale
There are two species of crayfish which are very popular and represent a variety to color variations. One species in particular are Procambarus alleni and Cambarellus patzcuarensis. P. alleni are recognizable because of blue variant commonly sold as Electric Blue Crayfish along with pink, orange and white specimens. Aquarium crayfish are very active and are known to keep their tanks clean and free of waste because they’re too busy to spend time under rocks. Tank mates can include dwarf shrimp and other kinds of fish which are relatively slow so a crayfish will not be able to grab them as a snack. Tropical fish companions include Fire Red Cherry Shrimp, guppies, and Celestial Pearl Danios. Typical sized crayfish can grow to some 5 inches and will breed with a mate in the aquarium. Breeding age can be attained in 1 to 2 months.
Recommended tank parameters
- PH level range: 6.5 to 8.5
- Temperature range: 65 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit
- Water type: Soft to hard
- Recommended tank mates: Fast-moving fish (such as Celestial Pearl Danios), dwarf shrimp (such as Blue Velvet shrimp, Sakura Fire Red Cherry Shrimp, etc.). Cichlids can be aggressive towards crayfish and should not be kept in the same tank.
- Additional notes: Crayfish will typically eat whatever they can catch, but since they are slow-moving, they are almost never able to harm fish or shrimp. They prefer foods like invertebrate pellets or blanched vegetables, but will also eat fish food and algae wafers. Crayfish molt periodically and sometimes eat their old exoskeleton.
