Paratilapia polleni is a stunning African cichlid which is endemic from the island of Madagascar. It’s important to note this species is endangered and is
listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Endangered species. In its habitat a decline is occurring from deforestation of river catchments. This species is nicknamed the Marakely which means black fish and it’s sometimes called Madagascar’s Black Diamond Cichlid. Another species from the genus is called Paratilapia bleekeri which looks similarly but has much large spots or diamonds. Polleni cichlids are fantastic looking cichlids well worth keeping.
