Julidochromis awesome African cichlids from Lake Tanganyika and what makes them so interesting and appealing is their coloration, interesting behavior and their size. This species of cichlid is fantastic from the perspective of size; Julidochromis are considered dwarf cichlids and are known to be slow growing.

 

Like most dwarf cichlids these Tanganyikan cichlids require hard alkaline water which can be accomplished simply by using dolomite in the tank. The pH level ranges around 8.5 – 9.0 generally. Julidochromis are relatively easy to spawn and care for. This species is a secretive cichlid fish which are substrate spawners, this means they lay their eggs on a hard surface and they love caves and tight crevices. Both parents are biparental in brood care and this species has been known to breed in harems.

 

This is a great Rift Lake cichlid to keep in a community tank or breeding tank. But if you go the route of the community it should be decorated with a lot rocks to create caves and hiding places. This allows them to feel at home and allows for territories to be established and to keep aggression down by offers places to escape or hide. Another strategy is to mix in other species from Tanganyikan or at least some type of dither fish which is designed to draw out fish which normally like to hide.
