Hemichromis stellifer a Jewel Cichlid from the Congo
Hemichromis stellifer wild collected from the Congo
This unusual species reached us wild collected from the Congo. In contrast to all other members of the Jewel Cichlid genus only H. stellifer exhibits in many moods a pattern of vertical dark stripes. The tiger pattern is very characteristic for the species. In all other respects (body shape, coloration etc.) the fish is as variable as any other Jewel Cichlid. There are deep bodied specimens with a pointed head as well as slender ones with a rounded snout - leaving differences in coloration aside… In the wild, this species is found usually in soft and acidic waters, but the fish proofs to be absolutely undemanding in this respect in the aquarium. Harmonizing pairs are usually very peaceful against each other. It is best to keep them in a single species tank.
