Cambarellus patzcuarensis, the Mexican Dwarf Crayfish are especially beautiful with their bright orange coloration. These invertebrates are great because their easy to care for, don’t hide during light hours and they are active and mobile creatures. This means you can enjoy them moving around the aquarium searching for food. These CPO Dwarf Crayfish are found in Mexico in a region called Lago de Patzcuaro, a volcanic crater lake in Michoacán, Mexico, in the west-central mountain region.
Orange Mexican Dwarf crayfish are marked as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species because of threats from increasing siltation rates and inputs of raw sewage (Torres 1993). The lake basin is highly developed, with cattle ranching, water abstraction and deforestation occurring.
